Winter Safety Tips

Your safety is our number one priority, so we've put together a list of tips and tricks to make sure that you're prepared to ride safely this winter.

Helmets: Scooter Riders

If you are a scooter rider, it is a legal requirement that you wear a protective helmet while riding, and for good reasons.

Helmets: Cyclists

If you are a cyclist, we strongly encourage you to wear a helmet too. Even if you are an amazing and competent cyclist, often the factors that cause accidents are outside of your control and down to other road users. Wearing a helmet could be what saves you from serious injuries should you ever be involved in an accident.

Lights: Cyclists

Please note that the government requires that when cycling between sunset and sunrise your bike MUST be fitted with the following:

White front light
Red rear light
Red rear reflector
Amber / yellow pedal reflectors – front and rear on each pedal.

It is illegal and extremely dangerous to cycle without lights, even if you are wearing Deliveroo branded reflective gear. For more info, please consult the UK Highway Code (Rule 60).

Brakes and Tyres: Cyclists

Rubber rim brake pads wash out fast in wet conditions. You can use harder or specialised materials to avoid changing pads constantly. If possible, change to disk brakes to ensure an overall better deceleration.

Heavier and thicker materials combined with deeper tread should give the additional grip and protection against punctures needed for the winter months. Inner tubes filled with sealant are also a good option to help keep you on the road throughout the winter.

Furthermore, a puncture repair kit and pump are great pieces of kit to keep handy all year around.

Brakes and Tyres: Scooter Riders

Avoid hard braking unless is an emergency and make sure to increase your stopping distance when the conditions are bad. Progressive braking, using both brakes, is the key.

You MUST have winter tyres during winter. A proper set of winter tyres will make sure you have good grip on wet, cold and icy winter days.

Waterproof clothing is a must have in winter. Apart from your waterproof Deliveroo kit we recommend you also use items like gloves, muffs, overshoes and even heated equipment.
